Plus, plugging in via USB-C now gives you 24-bit lossless audio. For the first time, you can actually hear everything a studio master has to offer through these headphones.
What Didn’t Change (And That’s a Problem)
However, not everything changed — and that’s where things get frustrating.
Unfortunately, the design is identical. Same weight at 385 grams, which is heavy. Additionally, there’s still no IP rating for water resistance. The Smart Case still looks ridiculous and barely protects the headband. Moreover, there’s no folding mechanism and still no power button.
As for battery life, it remains at 20 hours. In contrast, Sony’s XM6 gives you 50 hours. Similarly, Bose QC Ultra delivers 30 hours. Therefore, Apple hasn’t moved the needle here at all.
For a product that took six years to update and still costs $549, these feel like missed opportunities.
So Who Should Buy These?
If you’re deep in the Apple ecosystem — iPhone, Mac, iPad — the AirPods Max 2 are probably the best headphones you can buy. The seamless switching between devices, the integration with Apple Intelligence, the Spatial Audio head tracking — nothing from Sony or Bose comes close to that experience on Apple devices.

But if you’re not fully in the Apple world, or if battery life and portability matter to you, the Sony WH-1000XM6 at $349 is genuinely hard to argue against. Better ANC in lab tests, 50 hours of battery, foldable design, $200 cheaper.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra sits in the middle — excellent ANC, foldable, $429, and it works great on any device.

The AirPods Max 2 are the headphones the original should have been. The H2 chip transforms the experience, the new smart features are genuinely useful, and the sound quality is arguably the best you’ll get from any wireless over-ear headphone right now.
